Arts at The Farmhouse | Scent, Memory and the Page, May 3, 10:00am-1:00pm
As part of our Arts at The Farmhouse series, this is the first Writing Workshop offered at The Seasoned Farmhouse, created in the same spirit that guides our cooking classes: slowing down, paying attention, and letting the senses lead.
This workshop uses scent as a creative entry point. Smell is closely tied to memory, appetite, and emotion, and we will work with it as a way of opening the door to new writing.
We will begin with a brief warm up exercise, followed by three guided writing prompts. Writing will happen in focused bursts, with time in between to pause, reflect, and, if you choose, share excerpts or impressions with the group. Sharing is always optional. Listening is just as much a part of the experience as writing.
For this class, please bring a notebook, a pen, and a personal or meaningful scent. This could be a bottle of perfume or aftershave, or something more tactile such as citrus, herbs, flowers, spices, tobacco, or incense. Much like an ingredient in a recipe, this scent will become part of the framework we write from.
Open to writers of all kinds and at all stages. Poets, essayists, long form writers, and those interested in journaling or personal reflection are all welcome. No prior workshop experience is necessary.
Coffee and tea will be available throughout the session. We will end the class with a simple Farmhouse lunch, featuring a seasonal soup and salad, and time to linger a little longer around the table.
Instructor: Malinda Meadows
Malinda Meadows is a writer based in Columbus, Ohio. She studied creative writing, poetry, and flash fiction at University College Cork in Ireland. Her work has appeared in Four Faced Liar, Anti-Heroin Chic, and The LEON Review, among others. She writes long form pieces on food, grief, community, and travel.
